Meet the delegates: Kate Mason

Today it’s my pleasure to introduce Kate Mason, who’s attending as a reader but who also writes–proving once again that there really isn’t much of a division between readers and writers at the Meet 🙂 I didn’t realise that I’d encountered Kate numerous times online until she revealed to me the sheer number of aliases she goes under: K, Polipetl, KateM and Katarzyna! However, she’s published her stories for the Goodreads MMR Group’s LiAW and LHNB events under the name of K. Mason. Consistent branding just might not be her thing 😉

Kate MasonTell us about yourself in 100 words or fewer.

I spend my days masquerading as a 40 year old lawyer….but I’m actually still not sure what I want to do when I grow up. My spare time is managed by a small pack of hell hounds, known as “the mob”, and two naked cats… When I’m not catering to their every whim, I spend my time reading, researching potential story ideas I rarely get round to writing, baking and taking my knitting out to the pub. I am somewhat accident prone and have an uncanny ability injure myself on totally harmless objects… oh and blow up electrical equipment

Tell us something about you that might come as a surprise!

Erm, er, erk…. *thinks hard* …. nope, not coming up with anything that might come as a surprise…. how boring of me… I must make an effort to go out and do something surprising just so I an report back in July!

What do you like most about the LGBTQ genre?

This is tricky to answer because there are a lot of different things I like, one of the main things though is the huge variety of subjects and sub-genres that it covers – From YA to high fantasy via contemporary, historical and erotica, I can find a book that will interest me. I don’t think I will ever get to the stage of running out of books in this genre that I want to read.

What are you most looking forward to about UK Meet?

Meeting other people to talk books with where I don’t have to explain what LGBTQ fiction is and won’t get slightly bemused and/or horrified looks from when I do. I’m also looking forward to meeting people I’ve spoken to on line for real.

If you had one wish which would come true at UK Meet, what would that be?

I’m kind of actually having a big wish granted by getting to the UK meet ….. now I just have to enjoy the weekend without bankrupting myself buying too many books

  1. As someone who has various aliases, I can sympathise with the branding thing, although I like to have “that” part of me for “that things”, and so forth. (Makes sense in my head.)

    • LOL – I’ve never even thought of it in branding terms – mainly as although I scribble I don’t really consider myself a writer – originally it was to keep my different hobbies separate, now I think it might just reflect a slightly split personality…..

To be honest I’ve never thought of it in terms of branding – it was a way of keeping my various hobbies separate… now it just seems to be a symptom of a slightly split personality I’ve developed!

      • I think it’s just an authory thing to get vaguely obsessed with branding. You keep getting people telling you to think about your brand. In many ways, I’d really rather not have to!

Jo is my slightly wicked alter ego. The rest of the time I’m Anna, who’s a reasonably well-behaved wife and mother. Split personalities rule!
