Meet the delegates: Clare London

Clare London really shouldn’t need any introduction as not only is she one of the “Shameless old slappers” who’s been to every Meet so far, but she’s a UK Meet organiser, and she’s been writing gay romance since the days when the genre first formed (yes Clare, you really have!). She’s also been to all the GayRomLit events over in the States, so I’m expecting she’ll be introducing me to everyone she’s met there too. If you don’t already know Clare, just go up to her and say hello. You’re sure of a warm welcome and a big hug!

clare1) Tell us about yourself in 100 words or fewer.

I’m an accountant by trade and – shock! to most people – I enjoy the job. I was born by the sea (Brighton) and still scuttle off there when I need an escape from London. I negotiated to a 4-day working week last year and am LOVING the changed balance of work/rest. The theory is more time for writing, though the weekly wash seems to have grown reverse-exponentially. I share my home with hubby and two hulking sons, so the testosterone level is high. I love them dearly, but I wish they’d pick up their socks more often.

2) Tell us something about you that might come as a surprise!

You mean, like I enjoy accountancy?! Or … I kissed the boxer Lennox Lewis once (gorgeous man). On the cheek, I hasten to add. And luckily he was sitting down at the time, because he’s a giant of a man, and if he’d been standing, I’d probably only have reached his hip and would have been kissing … his other cheek?! I can see the headlines now …

3) What do you like most about the LGBTQ genre?

Other people have shared their opinions on this, and I agree with them all so far :). It’s all about empowerment for me. What we love to read is always a personal choice and we can’t always express WHY – but the LGBTQ genre also allows me to write it, too, and share with other readers. The additional sense of community has also given me huge support and comfort and fun. I’ll ignore the times it’s also driven me to distraction with the arguments :).

4) What are you most looking forward to about UK Meet?

Meeting new and existing friends, and especially those that have travelled from other continents. The increasingly global nature of the event has been one of the most exciting things for me this year. And seeing some of Manchester. Oh, and the chocolate brownies at Friday night’s meal 🙂

5) If you had one wish which would come true at UK Meet, what would that be?

I *really* hope to hear as many attendees as possible say that it met their expectations, they made friends, they had a ball, and that they’ll come again!

  1. You were one of the first authors I ‘met’ online and I liked you hugely. I spent all the time between then and Milton Keynes thinking you were American, living over here.
