1) If you wrote an autobiography, what would its title be and why?
I wouldn’t write an autobiography. I’ve never kept a diary so wouldn’t be able to remember dates and, honestly, if I could write something I’d prefer to write something interesting. However, I might write a slim pamphlet entitled “Beer and Roentgens” as a historical resource describing the goings on in the Royal Observer Corps in the late 70s and early 80s.
2) What has your writing/ blogging journey been like from the start until now?
I can’t remember not making stories – telling and writing and I’ve tried far too many ways of doing it to detail them here. Novels, bad poetry, even graphic novels. In my family, writing fiction was something done by clever people with letters after their names, or Barbara Cartland, so I used to write in secret. The first really big step, taken well into my 40s, was to let other people into the secret. That meant I had to finish something. Once I had bitten that bullet the next big step was to decide to try getting something published. Writing for fun, from the heart with joyful carefree abandon is a HUGELY different process to writing for publication where one has a ticky list of things to avoid at all costs and things to include because they are expected. I’ve given myself permission to not worry about it for a year or two while I sort out family problems. Meantime I can still read and review, I do a bit of beta reading and fact checking and am very happy to promote my friends’ work.
3) What do you hope to get from UK Meet that’s different from other conferences?
I can’t compare UK Meet to other conferences because I haven’t been to any. But the best thing about it is that there will be people there whom I love to bits that I usually only see once a year [apart from our delightful day in Oxford courtesy of Manifold Press]. As soon as the date is announced it is circled on next years calendar. A whole weekend with people who are interested in the things that interest me. It’s like a drink of water after a drought! Also,I feel very proud that last years royalties just about cover this year’s attendance!
